History of Our Club

History of Club

The Club name Santos was taken from one of the greatest Brazilian Football Clubs in the world with notable players such a Pele who was awarded the FIFA Footballer of the Century.  Pele on his 1000th Goal dedicated it to the poor children of Brazil. The goal, called popularly O Milesimo (The Thousandth), occurred in a match against Vasco Dam Gama, when Pele scored from a penalty kick at the Maracana Stadium.   Pele full name  Edison Arantes do Nascimento was given the prestigious title by FIFA as the Ambassador of Football for the World.

The origin of the Club name was an idea adopted by Mark Branski and Steve Gibbs taken from the Brazilian Club Santos and the inspirational player Pele on the standards that he strived to achieve.  This was the benchmark foundation for Pro Santos to develop Children to have a passion, a focus and a purpose within sport of Football.

The Club origin was formed late in 1994 as response to the notable lack of activities for young children in the locality of Stivichall/ Cheylesmore areas of Coventry, in particular within local primary Schools.  After meeting with the local Head of St Thomas Moore School weekly sessions were staged with the support of the School for the first season.  Funding was sought and donations acquired and the President of the Club Steve Gibbs founded Pro Santos FC.  Within the first year membership grew to over 150 children, it attracted children of all abilities and ethnicity and a structure was formed on the basis of Health Equality and Fun for all.

The first Team is now our present Under 16 Team originally formed in 2001 Under 9’s Team.  This Team has had some significant success in the Season of 2006/7 as runners up in the League.

Over the last few years the Club has entered the Coventry and District Minor Football League as an affiliated member of the Birmingham FA. In 2003/2004 we had 2 teams in the league, in 2004/2005 we had 3 teams in the league and in 2005/2006 we had 5 teams entered in the league. At present the Club has 9 Teams and as you can see we are growing stronger each year.

Pro Santos FC is committed to Youth Development as our Club Logo states giving access to the sport of Football within the Community regardless of ability, social status or ethnic origin.

Above all Pro Santos is a family orientated Club with emphasis on good sportsmanship and praise for all individuals within Club.
